报告摘要:Why did the Mona Lisa turn her left cheek when having her portrait painted? The desire to turn the left cheek is found in most portraits and most probably reflects functional specialisation of the hemispheres. This talk explores asymmetries between the left and right sides of the face in the visual expression of emotion and speech. Experiments demonstrate that models turn the left side of the face when trying to express emotion. Turning the left cheek also affects observers – who find left-cheek poses to be more emotionally expressive. It is concluded that turning the left or right side of the face can have an important impact on effective communication and that this asymmetry may be part of our innate repertoire of communication.
