报告摘要:Procrastination is a prevalent and pernicious problem that can undermine productivity as well as erode health and well-being. This is especially the case when avoiding unpleasant tasks becomes a habit. In this talk I will first present evidence that highlights procrastination as harmful form of delay that confers risk and vulnerability for poor health-related outcomes related to mental health, health behaviors, sleep, stress and coping, and even chronic disease. Next the talk will focus on the science behind why people procrastinate using theory and evidence which support a central role for emotion regulation in the genesis and maintenance procrastination. Based on this perspective, I introduce new models that highlight the role of contextual factors in procrastination that impede effective emotion regulation, or that amplify the experience of negative emotions and create vulnerability for procrastination. The talk will conclude with evidence and theory outlining why taking a compassionate approach for addressing procrastination is important for addressing the emotion regulation issues underlying procrastination, and for reducing its toll on health and well-being.
